It was my last checkup before surgery. Diabetic retinopathy was causing me to go blind.  I had already had surgery on my left eye and now my right eye was needing surgery.  The eye surgeon sat down and adjusted the equipment for my eye exam.  I heard him say ‘hmph’.  He opened a drawer in the cabinet next to him and said he needed to get a higher-powered lens.  My thoughts did not go to a good place.  He examined my eye again, moved his chair back and looked very perplexed.  He said “I need to get another higher-powered lens” and left the room.  Now I’m thinking ‘oh great what is he seeing or not seeing?’.  He comes back into the room and said ‘let’s try this’, examines my eye, flies backwards in his roller chair, wipes sweat off his brow, and said ‘I need to discuss with another surgeon’ and leaves the room.  Now I am thinking of how I am going to live life as a one-eyed blind girl when he walks back into the room.  He sits down, examines my eye again, stands up, wiping more sweat from his brow and said ‘There is no medical reason for the healing in your eye. I am cancelling the surgery’.
